Notice the typical shape
of this former shop entrance with its
window at the side of the door frame. Above, jutting out
of the wall, is the back of the household oven. Inside
the house, access to the oven would usually be under the
mantelpiece.
The oven would be built into a side wall of the chimney,
but this was sometimes not thick enough for the size of
the oven and the solution was to build it jutting out
from the outside wall.
